Neonatal Observership Programme

Overview

Our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is the largest facility in Singapore that treats premature babies and infants, including those referred from other hospitals.

KKH has one of the lowest mortality rates in the world, at 1.99 per 1,000 live births. This outcome has been made possible by close coordination between our perinatal and neonatal teams to manage high-risk pregnancies and deliveries, and extend timely and advanced neonatal care to the newborn.

Aim of Programme

• To enhance the learning of neonatal intensive care, special care and various newborn screening programmes
• To obtain update on the recent advances in the critical care of the preterm and full-term newborn infants
  

Duration of Programme

1-4 weeks (variable depending on the funding from the home country)

Number of Training Places

2-4 positions available at any one time

Content Areas

• Ward rounds in the NICU and SCN
• Ventilatory support (Nasal prong CPAP, synchronised ventilation)
• Management of pulmonary hypertension in the newborn (PPHN)
• Management of ELBW infant
• Management of hypoglycaemia
• Observation of percutaneous central vein catheter
• Prevention of nosocomial infection
• Newborn screening programmes
• Advance trchnologies (HFOV, inhaled nitric oxide, therapeutic hypothermia for HIE)
• Weekly mortality / morbidity rounds
• Weekly journal club
  

Training Methods

Attachment in NICU, SCN and PW. No hands-on training involved.

II Target Audience and Eligibility Requirements

Target Audience

Foreign paediatricians and neonatologists

Pre-requisite/Eligibility Requirement(s)

Candidates must have a postgraduate degree or diploma in paediatrics.

III Other Information

Course Fees

Course fee will be determined upon application.

Funding

Candidates should be self-funded or have funding from external sources/institutions.

Certification

A formal certificate signed by the Head of Department, Division Chairman and Chairman, Medical Board of the hospital will be given to the candidate upon successful completion of training.
