What is Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET)?

A proportion of patients may have excess good quality embryos which may be frozen for future use. The use of frozen embryos in an IVF cycle is known as a Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET) cycle. It is also commonly called a Thaw cycle.

If you decide to use the frozen embryos in future, the embryos can be thawed and transferred as part of a natural or regulated/artificial thaw cycle where you will not need to undergo injections or egg collection again:

  1. Natural thaw cycle / Ovulation induction thaw cycle
If the woman’s menstrual cycle is regular, her cycle will be monitored using transvaginal ultrasound scans, urine or blood tests to predict ovulation (natural cycle) and to estimate the most suitable time for embryo transfer. Sometimes, oral medication may be given to induce ovulation (ovulation induction cycle) for patients with irregular menstrual cycle. The hormones produced by ovulation is needed to prepare the womb lining for pregnancy.

  2. Regulated/Artificial thaw cycle
Your menstrual cycle is regulated by administering hormonal treatment (oral medications) to prepare the womb lining to receive the embryo/s. The uterus will be monitored using transvaginal ultrasound scans. Sometimes, dose adjustments may be necessary.
