Advantages
  • Cheap (purchase and maintenance)
  • Easy to use

  • Portable and easy to use
  • Shorter inhalation duration
  • Most have self-contained power source (battery operated)
  • Relatively more efficient than jet and ultrasonic nebulizer due to more optimal particle size and higher drug concentration
  • Easy to use
  • More efficient drug delivery compared to jet nebuliser

Disadvantages
  • Need additional tubings
  • Relatively more bulky due to the compressor and tubings
  • Generally needs a power point
  • Relatively less efficient in drug delivery

  • Relatively more expensive (especially maintenance)
  • More difficult cleaning for those which mesh can be separated
  • Not suitable for viscous liquid or those that can crystallize on drying
  • Some drugs (budesonide) are not suitable for ultrasonic
  • Degradation of heat-sensitive drugs as heat is generated during the process
  • Large residual volume
  • Generally needs a power point
  • Relatively more bulky
