PMIS Unit Fellowship Programme

Overview

Fellows will get an opportunity to train in a highly skilled team of gynaecological endoscopic surgeons and nurses with expertise in endoscopic surgery with the latest laparoscopic and hysteroscopic technology, learning useful skills that will be relevant in clinical practice.

Aim of Programme

The KK Women's and Children's Hospital MIS Unit Fellowship Programme is a comprehensive postgraduate training programme in laparoscopy and hysteroscopy. With defined syllabus covering anatomy, energy sources, ergonomics, tissue handling and suturing technique, the Fellowship Programme aims to advance the Fellow’s laparoscopic and hysteroscopic skills to the next level. The Fellowship Programme also incorporates an academic syllabus focusing on research leading to a publication by the end of the Fellowship Programme.

The mission of the KK Women's and Children's Hospital MIS Unit Fellowship Programme is to help Fellows gain the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to provide their patients with safe, high-quality and cost-effective Minimally Invasive Surgery Treatment.

Duration of Programme

6-12 months

Learning Outcomes

After completing the programme, Fellows will be able to:

Run MIS Clinic and perform outpatient hysteroscopic services independently
Be the first assistant to operative cases and first surgeon in selected cases to improve operative laparoscopic skills
Formulate and aim publication for a research project

Content Areas

Course Contents

Months 1 to 3

Report to supervising officer, MIS Unit
Briefing of department activities and role in department
Orientation tour of hospital facilities
Pelvic Trainer session to evaluate level of skill
Attend all operative sessions and clinic sessions of unit
Lectures and tutorials on the Essentials of Laparoscopy and
Hysteroscopy
Second Surgical Assistant at operative cases
Hands-on Pelvic Trainer to practice specific laparoscopic skills including;
- Basic manoeuvres with instruments
- Basic scissors techniques
- Tissue Handling Techniques
- Laparoscopic Suturing Techniques

There will be a performance assessment at the end of three months.

Months 4 to 12

Run MIS Clinic independently
Perform outpatient hysteroscopic services independently
First assistant to operative cases and first surgeon in selected cases
Lectures and Tutorials on Advanced Laparoscopic & Hysteroscopic Techniques
Hands-on teaching of Advanced Laparoscopic & Hysteroscopic procedures
Participate in teaching and departmental activities
Review of complications focusing on learning points
Attend workshops and conference organized by MIS Unit
Formulate a research project for publication

End of programme

Review of program and feedback session
Completion of project with submission of publication
Preparation of report

II Target Audience and Eligibility Requirements

Target Audience

Gynaecologists who are interested to have clinical exposure and hands-on surgical training can apply for the MIS Unit Fellowship Programme. Completion of the MRCOG exam is preferred and the period of attachment is at least six months.

Pre-requisite/Eligibility Requirement(s)

Candidates must fulfil the following criteria:

Proficiency in English Language (both spoken and written) is compulsory
(TOEFL paper-based test score of 600)
Completion of MRCOG Exams, MRANZCOG Exams or ACOG Board Exams equivalent
Completed Specialist Examination and recognized as O&G Specialist in their country of practice
Currently practising in country of origin

Funding

All funding will be at the applicant’s expense. Arrangement for conference and workshop subsidies can be arranged for Fellows during the period of training.

Observership Programme

Doctors who would like to visit the MIS Unit for the purpose of observing advanced laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery can apply for the MIS Unit Observership Programme.

Candidates must fulfil the following criteria:

At least one year of satisfactory completion of housemanship/internship.
Completed specialist examination and recognised in their country of practice.
Currently practising in country of origin.
